Just as there is no “one size fits all” family, the same is true for family law attorneys. Our personalities, style, and approach are reflective of who we are both in and outside of the office, as well as our experience over time. Some attorneys have a softer demeanor, some are more direct, but whatever style you prefer, one thing should guide your decision: who are you most comfortable with to handle your case?
Family law matters are the most personal matters in the law, and you will discuss with your attorney everything from issues between you and your spouse, to challenges your children may face, to financial issues that may be a source of pride or disappointment. You should feel that your attorney listens to you, but also that your attorney is giving you practical, realistic advice. You should be able to trust that your attorney’s advice is based on their knowledge and experience, and that they are not telling you what you want to hear, but instead what you need to hear.
Being a family law attorney is difficult in the sense that we empathize with our clients, but we also have to look at the case from both sides: what will the other side argue or bring up, and how do you address those issues? What factors are in your client’s favor, but also what are factors that the other side can claim? Being a family law attorney means listening to our clients, but also telling them difficult realities which may include limitations on what a court can do to try to rectify a situation.
As a client, you should feel be confident that your attorney is looking at your case from many different perspectives, in an effort to bring about the best possible outcome given your circumstances.
