Independence Day is a big day for us as a country, and it can also be a big day for those going through a family law matter. Getting separated or divorced, having an outcome for your family, yourself, and your children that you didn’t want or expect, can be devastating; but looking at it from the viewpoint after the matter is over can be very different. Getting out of a situation where you and your spouse are not happy, being able to provide your children with two homes where both parents are comfortable and optimistic, may seem like it’s a long way off, but once you get there the feeling of independence can be life-changing.
For many individuals, being on their own after a divorce may be the first time as an adult that they are able to make decisions they want, make choices they think are best, take steps they think are right for themselves and their family. That feeling of independence, of knowing you no longer have to answer to someone about every little move you make, can provide an opportunity for growth as a person and a parent.
So on this Independence Day, if you are going through a difficult time, take heart it will not always be so difficult. If you have been through a contentious matter and it’s over, think about how your future may look different than you thought, but not necessarily worse, as you start something new. And for all of you, from all of us at Lee & Decker Family Law, happy Independence Day.
