My law partner and I just started our own law firm, Lee & Decker Family Law, LLC. And it occurred to me, that starting a new law firm is a lot like any major life change: there are too many things to do, not enough time each day, and things are a mess for quite some time. And then slowly but surely each part of the firm starts to fall into place: the website, the paint on the walls, the furniture, and finally the people. Finally there is a place and a space for the new firm and you feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that you not only made it work, but that you made it your own.
Going through a divorce is much the same. You are leaving something you know, that you believed in, that you wanted, but that over time became something you wanted to change or leave. Making that decision is never easy, and never quick, but once it’s made, you start planning for what’s next. You talk to an attorney. You understand more about what your future may look like. You start to investigate what may stay the same as it is and what may change entirely. You move forward, and eventually through all the mess and angst, you come out on the other side, to something you created yourself.
